Beat-era writer William S. Burroughs, or at least the awareness of Burroughs, was a running thread through a wide range of musical and cinematic work toward the end of his life (Burroughs passed in 1997).
This would include his supporting character role in 1989's Drugstore Cowboy, spoken word collaborations with alt-rock and hip-hop artists (Dead City Radio and Spare Ass Annie), David Cronenberg's attempted filming of Naked Lunch, and the animation short that inspired this little exercise: The Junky's Christmas.
As a long-time Burroughs fan, it is not entirely surprising that Junky's Christmas would surface in my YouTube feed at exactly the same time I was looking for something I could quickly turn into a "proof of concept" for a web comic publishing platform. As a one-time graphic designer, it is not entirely surprising that I would wind up enjoying the project.
But I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I had fun with this. I hope you do as well.
